Dr-Conlon---Excessive-Sweating

Do you have hyperhidrosis?
Are you self-conscious about excessive sweating?
Do you feel that has sometimes had a detrimental affect on your self-confidence and work or social life?
Do you think about the appearance of sweat on your clothes?
Does sweating cause you to change your clothes every few hours or occasionally ruin clothes?
Do you have a family member who is also affected?

If you answer yes to these questions it is likely that you are suffering from Hyperhidrosis.

What Causes Excessive Sweating?
Hyperhidrosis usually begins in childhood or adolescence and is caused when the body’s sweat glands become over stimulated releasing sweat more profusely. All our sweat glands release sweat in response to a signal from a nerve and it is when these signals are over active that Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) occurs. Sometimes the condition can be a sign of other diseases such as an over active thyroid gland or due to medication but in the majority of cases there is no cause for the condition and we are not entirely sure why the sweat glands are over stimulated. Sweating affecting the palms and soles of feet is inherited and most people also have a family member who is also affected.

Although the problem can adversely affect your quality of life, it is actually harmless. Any site on the body can be affected by Hyperhidrosis, with the palms, soles, and armpits most commonly affected. If the problem started when you were over 25 years old and also occurs during the night then Dr Conlon’s Aesthetic Clinic recommends that you see your GP before coming for treatment to ensure there is no other cause for the condition.

How does the treatment work?
Wrinkle Relaxing Injections are given in the areas surrounding the sweat glands. When we sweat, it is response to a signal sent from the nerves to the sweat glands. Following injection of the toxin just underneath the surface of the skin, the injections work on these nerves and prevents the signals being transmitted from the nerve to the sweat gland and stops the activity of the gland and as a results stops the sweating.

The Procedure

Step 1: An anaesthetic ‘numbing’ cream is applied over the treatment area. It takes around 20 minutes to work, making the procedure comfortable.

Step 2: Anaesthetic cream is removed and skin is cleaned. No alcohol-containing solutions are used to clean the skin as this denatures the Wrinkle Relaxing Injections and reduces their potency.

Step 3: Dr Conlon then performs a series of tiny injections taking around 30 minutes. This part of the procedure is made relatively pain-free by the use of anesthetic ‘numbing’ cream.

Step 4: The treatment area is cleaned and the treatment is complete

Step 5: 3-14 days on positive results are seen with a reduction in sweat production and improved self-confidence.

Does it really work?

There are several studies on large numbers of patients from around the world showing show that patients achieve a greater than >70% reduction in the amount of sweating and a substantially improved quality of life. These results are further improved with the use of Wrinkle Relaxing Injection type A (Azzalure) which is used at Dr Conlon’s Aesthetic Clinic. Results are seen within 1 week and last between 8 and 12 months.

How many treatments will I need?
Treatment results usually last between 8 and 12 months. However, it is not unusual for results to last significantly longer than this as the condition slowly returns following treatment. Most clients have the procedure repeated at 12-18 month intervals.

What will I experience after the treatment?

There will be small raised areas where the injection has occurred and this will disappear after a couple of hours. In addition a few clients can experience very slight bruising but other than this, there are no visible signs of the treatment. Following treatment of excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) on the underarm area you will be able to return to normal activities immediately following the treatment.
Following treatment of excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) on the palms and feet, there is the possibility of slight weakness in the muscles of these areas.

At Dr Conlon’s Aesthetic Clinic, safety is our first and foremost priority and we therefore advise that clients do not drive for 24 hours following this treatment even though the weakness is so slight as to be unlikely to unsafe, we prefer not to take any risks at all.

Do I need to do anything before the treatment?

The only thing clients must do prior to treatment is refrain from antiperspirant use on the treatment area for 24 hours prior to the treatment.
